Carter Observatory served as New Zealand's national observatory from 1941 until May 2010 when it re-opened as a visitor attraction.
Visitors can take a virtual journey through space in the Pelorus Trust Planetarium - a state-of-the-art full-dome digital theatre, then take your own journey as you walk through the world-class interactive multimedia space experience.
Discover our Universe, along with some of New Zealand's most prestigious telescopes and astronomical artefacts. We aim to inspire and encourage you as we celebrate the culture, heritage and science of the Southern Skies with the thousands of people who visit us.
Carter Observatory offers visitors:
- Planetarium and audio visual show and displays
- Public events
- Curriculum based education programmes for schools
- Heritage repository for New Zealand astronomy
- Telescope viewing: Saturday night public viewing sessions (weather dependent)
The observatory is in a building of historical significance which has an historic 23cm refracting telescope.
