Weaving a small sea being, a mermaid from a ti kōuka leaf is a reminder of our connection to the environment and the weather.
This workshop enables participants to make a mermaid woven from a ti kōuka leaf. Ti kōuka leaves are known for their toughness (not good for mowers) and water resistance making them valuable for certain woven items.
The ti kōuka leaves have a form reminiscent of a sea creature’s tail and streamlined body.
Mermaids and other semi-human beings of the sea are known across a wide range of cultures and there are tales of the bad weather and other misfortunes that come from disrespecting these beings.
Designed for adults and children (10+ years)
Cost: $20/person (10 places/workshop)
