Built of brick, a legacy of the New Lynn area’s history in the production of brick, tiles and ceramics, St Thomas church was consecrated in 1927.
Over its 80 year history it has witnessed many changes that included the establishment of satellite churches to service the people of Titirangi and Glen Eden during the 1960’s.
In more recent times it has, like most mainstream churches world-wide, seen falling rolls as more people adopt a secular life-style. However, in the past few years our church community has seen regeneration with parishioners from Anglican traditions in other countries and from diverse backgrounds finding St Thomas’ to be their comfortable church home. They have joined with and been welcomed by a number of long-standing parishioners, many of whom have lived locally for most of their lives. Others come too, finding St Thomas’ to be a friendly and welcoming congregation.
Prayer is at the heart of our church. We invite people to come and experience God with us, in our regular Sunday morning service and in our Wednesday morning service of healing.
Vicar Fr Thomas Thomas (of St Thomas’) – yes, really, has been an Anglican priest for more than 25 years. He brings not only the Anglican theological tradition, but a breadth of pastoral experience and openness to other faith traditions and spirituality.
The church is located close to the heart of New Lynn – to Lynmall, to its Transport Centre and its civic amenities. The New Lynn transport hub is a 10 minute walk away. Buses stop nearby and the train station is a ten minute walk. See www.maxx.co.nz for timetables.
Our church hall is attached to the church and is used by a number of local clubs for their meetings and activities.
We share the church with other Christian traditions, including the Tongan Wesleyan Methodist and the Mar Thoma Indian church.
We also run an Op Shop located in Seabrook Avenue which for 20 years has been an outreach service to the local community.
