German settlers arrived in Upper Moutere in 1843 and after a rough start, settled Upper Moutere, then called Sarau, in 1850. Cordt Bennseman also started building the Moutere Inn in 1850 as a resting place between Richmond and Motueka - in the heart of the new hop growing area.
The Moutere Brewing Company has been established by the current owners of the Inn to offer brews that the early settlers in the area would have missed. We hope you also enjoy them!
