The Cook display, complete with mannequins depicting Joseph Banks, botanist, a cabin boy and Cook in full dress uniforms in a big cabin on his ship, Endeavour, is a highlight of the museum.
The kauri timber industry is also well represented with lifestyle displays, along with many artefacts and photos, which can be ordered. Other displays include Mäori, maritime (particularly of HMS Buffalo), military, a growing native and imported bird and animal display, and local community history.
A growing reference system and library caters for queries from researchers, the general public and schools.
