Construction of the Aotea Centre began in 1985 with the official opening by Dame Kiri Te Kanawa on 9 September 1990. The Aotea Centre is a multi venue centre comprising of two major theatres, three spacious foyers and a number of rooms and spaces suitable for meetings, conferences, and exhibitions. The venue has been used for a wide range of events including APEC summit in 1999, the NZ International Comedy Festival Comedy Galas, rock concerts, international comedians and also acts as the Auckland home for the Royal New Zealand Ballet and The NBR New Zealand Opera.
Aotea Centre is the largest performing arts centre of its kind in New Zealand, with incredible facilities, a unique, contemporary design and state-of-the-art technology.
The main auditorium seats 2,256 people.
It is also available to hire for conferences, gala dinners, exhibitions, school balls, and other corporate events.
