About
This is an introductory workshop for those interested in learning Lighting and Sound in amateur theatre, but could be applied to professional work, including and setting up music concerts etc. It will consist of a mixture of theory and hands-on experience. It’s run over 2 days. Participants need to be 14 years and above. Go to https://hlt.org.nz/services/workshops/ to download a registration form and return it to the theatre office: info@hlt.org.nz

Course Overview
Theory:
Types of lights, smoke machines, lighting boards, patching, dimmers, LED lights, moving lights, cue programs, basic lighting design, cables, speakers, amps, audio mixers, microphones.
Hands-On work:
Rigging lights (including LEDs), gelling lights to get different colours, focussing lights on stage, putting light levels up and down, and programming in a scene with a lighting board.
Plugging in speakers, running, securing and coiling cables, playing sound samples from a laptop, and setting levels on a sound mixer.
House, Safety, Emergency and Backstage Lights, Backstage Audio Monitors, comms system.
Other theory:
General safety: overview of WorkSafe rules, rigging, fault finding and fixing, teamwork etc.
A practical lighting design & a sound setup design for a particular scenario will be given as homework at the end of the initial day. This homework will form the basis of a design, be rigged on the second day, some cues plotted, & sound check if time allows.
The design elements utilised in this practical will then be explored through discussion and evaluation of the difficulties encountered and the process behind creating a successful design.
A basic knowledge and understanding of lighting & sound equipment is recommended for those enrolling.

About the tutor
Glen Mortensen has been an Audio & lighting designer as an production manager for theatrical performances and events for 30 years. He has toured New Zealand and worked in nearly every theatre in the country, with a show for six years. Has also been involved with some big arenas, & outdoor concerts including U2, Tina Turner, Dire Straits, Dave Dobbyn, etc. He has worked locally in some theatres helping out in technical aspects of a show.
He has been awarded a Lighting design at Showdown & nominated for many others. He has a Certificate in Sound & lighting & has worked in some challenging places. So, troubleshooting is very much in his DNA. Glen started out in audio, with his first ever job doing sound for a very young Brooke Fraser.
