Join us for the screening of this fantastic documentary about the Northern Maori schools project and be part of a discussion for a more creative holistic education for our children.
The HeART of the Matter looks at major changes in New Zealand teaching which began after World War ll where a "thoroughly bicultural and arts-centered education system" was introduced into classrooms — in contrast to the rote learning of the past. The film follows schools who experimented with this innovative method of practical education that gave the arts, especially Māori art, purakau (stories) waiata and kapa haka a central role in the children's learning.
Combining interviews and archival footage, Luit and Jan Bieringa (The Man in the Hat) examine this period of radical educational reform, and ask what lessons can be applied to the present.
Following the screening we will have talks provided by renowned educators and artists, including John Lawry.
