Due to the 22 February Canterbury Earthquake The Physics Room is currently closed until further notice and all scheduled events have been postponed. A detailed assessment of our building at 209 Tuam Street has been conducted and although our premises were reasonably unscathed it resides within a cordoned off area of the Christchurch CBD which is not currently accessible. We were granted limited access to our building to retrieve essential items and have relocated our office to CPIT where we have joined a number of other Christchurch arts organisations left homeless after the earthquake.
The Physics Room exists to act as a catalyst for the development and promotion of ideas and debate through art. It evolved out of South Island Art Projects organization in June 1996, and has been at its current site in Tuam Street since 1999.
A central Physics Room aim is that parallel, integrated activities be launched in the gallery, our publications, our website, and other local public art projects, giving the issues and ideas raised by the programme the widest possible dissemination and discussion. Our goal is to actively seek links between the arts and other critical areas of cultural production; to involve art as a contributing voice in wider intellectual, social, and political debate.
