New Zealand’s oldest museum, The Nelson Provincial Museum’s collections date back to 1841 when the Nelson Institute was established on ship by the New Zealand Company.
The collections include a regional social history photographic collection of over 1.5 million images, taonga Māori, art, regional archives, research library, domestic and technical objects and some natural history specimens.
In 2005 the museum opened a new regional exhibition centre on part of the original Town Acre 445 site, where The Literary and Scientific Institute of Nelson first opened in September 1842.
Archives, library and photographs are housed separately in the former museum building in Isel Park, Hilliard Street, Stoke.
