We’re an inner city Presbyterian Church in Wellington founded by Scottish migrants in 1853. Now an active multi-cultural and multi-generationalfaith community, we continue the presence and proclamation of the Gospel in the centre of Wellington city, valuing our traditions and acting creatively for the future.

St John’s current church building was built in 1885 and has a New Zealand Heritage Category 1 rating, meaning that it is recognised to have special or outstanding historical or cultural significance or value. Built from kauri and other native timbers, to a design by renowned architect Thomas Turnbull, it is an important symbol of God’s grace and love for the city.

All are welcome at St John’s weekly Sunday services at 10 am. The services follow a traditional format, with the children and youth going out to their programmes after the children’s talk section of the service. Most services have a blend of traditional hymns and contemporary songs. There is a choir and a contemporary singing group.

Following the service, tea and coffee are served, to which everyone is warmly invited. Most Sundays, the morning congregation numbers between 180 and 230 people, so there’s always someone to talk to!

Parents can participate in the morning service knowing that their children are well looked after. St J’s Kids (Sunday School) and Youth Ministry operate during school terms during morning services.
