Whakarewarewa Forest

Escape into the beautiful Whakarewarewa Forest, one of Rotorua’s most spectacular natural assets.

Famous for its magnificent stands of towering Californian Coastal Redwoods it is just five minutes drive from the city centre. Here you can experience some of the finest walking and mountain bike trails in the world. Not to mention taking in superb panoramic views of Rotorua City, Lake and surrounding district. If you love the outdoors this area is for you!

The Visitor Centre is the place to go for all your track maps and forest information. Let the friendly shop staff help you to make the most of your unique forest experience with up to date information and advice. It is also the perfect place to find and extra-special keepsake to remind you of your visit. The shop specializes in handcrafted native wooden gifts and NZ made gifts inspired by nature. There is picnic & toilet facilities available and ample parking right outside the door. Hot/cold drinks, ice- creams and snack food are also available for purchase.

The Redwoods Visitor Centre & Gift Shop is open everyday except for Christmas.

Summer (October to March)

Monday to Friday - 8.30am to 5.30pm
Weekends & Public holidays - 10.00am to 5.00pm

Winter (April to September)

Monday to Friday - 8.30am to 4.30pm
Weekends & Public holidays - 10.00am to 4.00pm

The main gates are open for vehicle access at 5.30am and close at 8.30pm. You can walk/bike in at any time. We would encourage use of the forest in daylight hours only for your own safety.
