Map showing Long Island Marine Reserve

This reserve is well-known to divers for its large, friendly blue cod, who may come up to you and nibble a finger. It extends 463 m (a quarter nautical mile) offshore around Long Island, Kokomohua Island and the unnamed charted rock northeast of Kokomohua Island, and protects a variety of typical inner Marlborough Sound habitats.

Snorkelling and scuba diving are the best ways to explore and meet the inhabitants, as this reserve can only be reached by boat. There are no jetties on the islands but a flat landing area (shingle spit, western side) on Long Island is a good place for picnics and bird watching.
