The young pioneer Harry Atkinson sawed the timber for his own house and created a farm here - but he is better known for being four times Premier of New Zealand.
Built over the year 1855-1856, it has an attractive garden and peaceful rural setting.
The inhabitants had to flee, after burying their valuables, during the New Zealand Wars. Hurworth Cottage was the only building to survive the Taranaki Wars of the 1860s - the others were burnt to the ground.
Access to Hurworth is only by guided tour (by arrangement).
Please contact Heritage New Zealand on (06) 759 2006 to arrange a time to suit.
