Two of New Zealand's greatest scientists spent childhood years in Havelock and attended the same primary school, more than 30 years apart. Nobel Prize-winning physicist Ernest Rutherford was the first to split the atom, and rocket scientist William Pickering oversaw many NASA missions to the moon.
