Fyffe House is the most tangible remnant of the Waiopuka whaling station that dates from 1842. The house has been built in three parts and the oldest part, the Cooper's Cottage, is built on whale bone vertebrae. The site of Fyffe House has been in occupation for at least 700 years.
Early remains, including a burial with large moa egg, have been found as well as evidence of kumara gardens 300 to 400 years old. The site that the house is built on is breathtakingly beautiful, looking to the sea, mountains and sky.
*** Fyffe House is CLOSED from 16 May - Spring for internal plaster repairs. *** Please contact Ann McCaw, Manager on fyffe@heritage.org.nz for further information or to arrange access to the site during this time. Our apologies for any inconvenience.
