Whether you want a leisurely stroll in our peaceful walled garden, or whether you want to experience an intrinsic part of not only Dunedin, but also the wider Otago regions cultural heritage. The Dunedin Chinese Garden offers an experience unique to the Pacific region.
As one of only three authentic Scholars Garden's outside of mainland China anywhere in the world, the Garden was designed and built in Shanghai, before being brought to Dunedin.
Described as our "Oasis in the City" the Garden features a unique rock mountain, pond, various courtyards and Pavilions, heated Tea House, Tower Room and Tea Shop at the rear.
The Tea Shop offers a range of goodies, including authentic Chinese Tea, buns and dumplings. As well as souvenirs including decorative screen, fans, embroideries , toys, bags, purses and adults and childrens clothing.
We offer a range of activities within the Garden, including authentic Chinese costumes for visitors to try on, a rapidly expanding collection of books in our Tower Room library, authentic Chinese puzzles and games, and weekly Weiqi workshops for adults and children.
Opening hours are Monday to Sunday 10-5
Evening viewing on Wednesdays only between 7 and 9 (October to May)
PLEASE NOTE - The Garden is closed only two full days of each year, and one half day. The two full days of closure include Easter Sunday, and Christmas Day. And, to honour ANZAC Day, the Garden is closed during the morning.
Guided tours can be booked prior to arrival at the Garden, at a cost of $20 per person.
The Garden is also available for hire for functions and weddings (for more information visit www.dunedinchinesegarden.com
We celebrate three of the main Chinese Festivals within the Garden, including the Dragonboat Festival, Moon Festival and the Chinese New Year, often interlinking them with holiday activities for families and workshops and classes.
