The McLeod’s first mill was built on the bank of Te Awaroa stream; part of the Otamateanui block, which had been made available to John McLeod, by the Te Taou chiefs. In 2006 the site is marked by the railway station and the Grand Hotel.

The name Terminus Hotel, given to the first two hotels on this site, recognised the significance of the site, as being the junction of the railway and harbour steamers which were the main transport route for travellers to the north or north-west until World War 2.

The first Hotel (Terminus), a two storey wooden building, was built about 1882 and burned down in 1905. It was replaced in 1906 by a two storey brick building. This building burned down in 1931 and was replaced by the concrete construction known as The Grand Hotel Helensville.

Maori customers were not allowed on the premises until the 1950s.

After many years being closed the hotel has been renovated and is now restored to her original grandeur, once again open for business.

We have ready now the beautiful Rosso Restaurant, our lounge/pub, lovely outside garden area as well as 10 bedrooms.

We will be adding two Honeymoon suites within the next few months, as well as opening up the big Public bar with big screen TV and creating an outside barbecue area with wood burning pizza oven – all in time for the Rugby World Cup.

Didier, Terry and the team look forward to the pleasure of your company in Helensville – you won’t find better hospitality (or coffee) anywhere in NZ.
