  • "GRACE JONES tops the bill for me! I have been waiting decades to see her - knowing she has been taking her show around the world in recent decades - but never to New Zealand. I use to play Pull Up To The Bumper from her LP Record before other people knew who she even was! I play Libertango myself on accordion and it is my theme song!! Even more interesting to see her in the outside venue at Puhinui where we had the Sweetwaters REunion (which headlined Elvis COstello - so it will be his second performance in that venue!!) . Add on the gobsmacking lineup of all the other world class and supporting blues artists in particular BB King - CLASSIC! PLus the NZ'ers - world class!!"

  • "B O R O D O V S K Y ! ! Going to BERLIN! YOU'll do great there! That's SO your style city! We were just lucky to have had you in NZ for 3 years of whirlwind performances! Like SPLORE midnight cabaret 2008! I'm sonicjett! I picked up YOUR ACCORDION in the middle of your performance this past FLEET FM NEW YEAR at Arapohue, and played quite a few pieces WITH YOU!!! I thought you were going to play the instrument, but it sat there all lonesome @ your feet! SO I pointed to it, and to me (as it was too noisy to talk and anyway you were in the middle of your set!!!) You shrugged OK, so I grabbed it from off the stage - and kept up with your tricky rhythms and dead stop silences! I promise to play and tell anything I hear about you on my sonicjett specialist show on community radio way up north here! [TO the competition organisers: I have to buy all my own CDs so Benka's CD would be much appreciated! AND heard by many OTHER PEOPLE AS WELL!] "

  • "REAL LOVE is finding your soulmate 35 years after you were together in High School; he looks you up after his cancer is "better"; rediscovering your close connection; realising the strength of your love for each other; rising above all obstacles, especially when his cancer came back within 3 months of getting back together; him saying with the cancer, things would get really difficult so if I wanted to go, go NOW rather than later ; tattooing my double heart committment to him onto my ring finger; commuting 4 hours a trip to see him for 6 years; managing to help give him strength to keep on top of his cancer for 5 years longer than expected; getting engaged on Valentines Day last year while driving home from hospital; and he died three weeks later (in the hospital where I was born); while we were planning to get married; sorting our headstone; finding he was buried in my plot by mistake so moving his side of the engraving to his corrrect side of the headstone; being together forever."

  • "I'm 57 now, and me AND my sister were widowed last year. Life's just too short! I went to the first two fantastic NZ WOMAD in Auckland - met the fabulous woman from Deep Forest and sat at the front in Cesar Strocio Bandoneon workshop etc! I would LOVE to be able to go again sometime before I am not able to travel anymore. Luckily I did my BIG OE in the 80's: I met my British rellies for the first time / backpacked round communist eastern europe by myself to see the world accordion champs in Poland / climbed to the top of a pyramid because they said I couldn't / travelled India to see where my parents met and worked / went to Paul Simon + Ladysmith, Chris Rea, Frankie Goes To Holly wood, Nina Hagen, Randy Newman etc... HEAVEN! My dream nowdays would be to follow MUSIC from around the world - from Argentina bandoneon tango and brazilian dance music like I play on the accordion, to the most wonderful international festivals / musicians / DJ's / bands / dance everywhere!"

  • "The Best Place i camped at was SPLORE quite a few years back on the Coromandel Peninsular where the camping areas had crazy themes and were all decorated up fabulously. AND running through the camping area was a meandering stream with art works around the edges and even in the stream - the best was a set of big cups and saucers (even with "toast" on) each one perched on a long rod stuck into the base of the stream, so the cups and saucers waved above the water!!!! Even ;longer a go than that the other fantastic place was at one of the early Nambassa's at Waiotawheta in the Karangahake Gorge, where I took an old four wheel drive vehice and an old parachute, and we set up the first womenspace (with women from all around NZ - we didnt wear any clothes) high up on the hill beside the australian aboriginals above Nambassa."

  • "Thanks gina - I think I found the right place eventually yesterday - did you recieve my entry story for the Mars volta competition?"

on The Mars Volta 4 years ago

  • "My strange story for the Mars Volta ticket competition is when 6 years ago I wrote on a piece of paper in the middle of the night a LONG LONG WISHLIST for a life partner (ie a man). Basic things like caring, and sense of humour, and understanding. I didn't include things like good looking though he was always of course to me. A few months later, completely out of the blue my boyfriend from school found me (after 38 years of not knowing where each other was). We got together immediately and it turned out he was my soul mate. I even had a ring with two hearts tattooed on my wedding ring finger (even though the tattooist said they don't do that atall I said I was old enough to know my own mind!). So to my and his astonishment he amazingly fulfilled all of my wishlist....except that I FORGOT TO WRITE ONE THING ON THE LIST: that we could LIVE TOGETHER PERMANENTLY. So for the next 5 years we were fated to live in different parts of the country to each other, and commute. But EVEN HARDER was that (because I didn't write the PERMANENT factor into my wishlist) his cancer came back - he got secondaries 3 months after we got together, and died 3 weeks after we got engaged last Valentines Day. Now I'm left to wonder what just happened. I'm still going to Mars Volta (AGAIN - I went last year). It suits my mood after the strange events of the last 5 years. "
