"It’s always a bit un-nerving sitting in the front row of a comedy show as you’re normally in the firing line. But this was where I found myself at the sell out first night show by UK comedian Jeff Green. An hour later I left the show intact and with mixed thoughts about the performance.
There were funny bits, especially in the first half of the show but Green seemed to lack any real connection with the audience. His observations about New Zealand including the numbers of Asian restaurants we have and the great OE, seemed like they were subjects he’d inserted into his script in what was a formulaic, but slickly presented routine.
Before the show I read that The Sun newspaper hailed Green as “the funniest stand-up in Britain”. I wasn’t sure whether this was a good sign or bad. The Sun’s more famous for its page 3 than its reviews, but Green has obviously made a mark in the UK.
