  • "Not sure if it qualifies, but I first heard the song 'Nothing wrong with you' (which he sings with his brother Neil) at a time when I was really really low - it helped me get through when my self belief was sorely lacking. The song is quite meaningful to me because of that and I still tear up a bit when I hear it."

  • "I love all the seasons, each for a different reason. Each time they change I'm reminded I'm still here and anything is always possible - fabulous! But let me tell you why I love winter... There's nothing better than being snuggled up with a loved one (or a good book!) on a blustery winter night - listening to the soothing sound of rain on the roof, or the awesome power of nature when a big storm hits, thunder rolling and lightening flashing. It can be quite exciting when the storm is close! Winter rain is cleansing and makes everything glisten, smelling clean and fresh, and when the wind is brisk it reminds you you're alive! Then there's toasty open fires, delicious mulled wines, yummy casseroles and guilt free desserts because you know you'll be all wrapped up in your favourite cuddly jumper. Then, of course, there's the wonderful promise of spring to come..."

  • "I live in a really noisy raucous house-share situation so, for me, the most intoxicating sound is... silence! I absolutely revel in rare moments of luscious silence. Then, when I am really chilled out, I slowly begin again to hear the tiny sounds of nature - a breath of wind, the rustle of leaves, the patter of light rain - that so often go unnoticed. Intoxicating!"

  • "It's easy to be merciful when a disaster or tragedy strikes, but if we all showed a just a little more compassion on a daily basis the world would be a much nicer place to live. Even something really small and simple. For my part, everytime I go to the supermarket I purchase an extra canned food item and a box of dog biscuits (even though I don't have a pet!) and place them in the City Mission and SPCA donation boxes at the entrance. I barely notice the extra on my grocery bill but I'm betting the recipients are grateful. It all adds up!"

  • "My hair first thing in the morning is a continual source of amusement... I never know what I'm going to get when I look in the mirror for the first time each day! I'm always surprised and amused by my hair's daily break for freedom and it's blatant disregard for managability, aesthetics and sometimes, gravity!!"

  • "I remember listening to 'Body Blow' just after 3 month backpacking trip around central america – and being really impressed with myself that I knew actually knew what 'Donde este la pollo' meant and how to pronounce it properly now that I spoke a bit of spanish. What a complete twit! Still a great song (and album) tho..."

  • "Much to the amusement of my friends I often get wicked hiccups - and they're always telling me to hold my breath to get rid of them, but it never works. Instead I do exactly the opposite! Simply breathe in and out as normal, then at some random point exhale completely and... don't take the next breath. Keep your lungs empty and continue 'not taking the next breath' for as long as you are able. Since breathing is such an automatic thing, you have to really concentrate on controlling your lungs - which breaks the rhythm of the hiccup every time!"

  • "Every time I hear a jazzy beat it conjures up a picture of my father, who died 22 years ago, waggling a pointed finger in time (and sometimes not!) to the music. I used to laugh at him back then, but I've grown up since and now appreciate the music as much as he did - I suspect I've even waggled a finger occasionally! He'd be laughing at me now."

  • "I cannot explain how the universe knows when I am running late, nor why it will then insist on hiding my car keys, sending me traffic jams and organising for constant red lights and other miscellaneous mishaps – seemingly just to make sure. Yet at other times everything will go smoothly... ?!?!?!?!?!"
