  • "What a fantastic time we all had over two days. Great to catch 1664 teenagers being good and having fun singing. Check out the awards on http://thebigsing.wordpress.com/"

  • "We ended up with nearly 200 singers - another great event. Our hard working committee even managed to stop long enough for a photo!"

  • "My four last songs are the ones I'd like played at my funeral. Not that I'm planning on needing a funeral for some time yet! They are sure to change over the years (If I'd died 40 years ago they would have included Beatles, Beachboys, Bach and Beethoven). However let it be known that my current list includes Nimrod from Elgar's "Enigma Variations", "Pie Jesu" from Andrew Lloyd Webber's Requiem, Chiome d'oro by Monteverdi and just about anything by JS Bach - probably Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring because it was sung at our wedding. But please, I'd like a few more years yet! What a pity that Strauss died when he did, he could have written lots more wonderful songs."

  • "It's not really a battle - just different ways of expressing what we feel or believe. Like magnets with their different poles, the attraction is in being different."

  • "It's very frustrating to make up things - only to find that one day they really exist, and you didn't patent the idea. I remember once (ok, back in the early 60's) sitting in the back of our car pretending to talk on a telephone that just happened to be sitting there - you know, the old sort with a dial - I really thought I had some people fooled, from the looks they gave me. I also 'invented' being able to pay bills over the telephone, turn on appliances and open doors by remote control, the list goes on. I've made up lots of things that don't exist yet but I won't be surprised when they do!"

  • "Well when you live in Wellington, going south can only mean crossing that wild (sometimes) stretch of water. But it all depends on your point of origin - Aucklanders would naturally head south (to Welly) for a spot of culture. Even those living in Invercargill can head south - but most people never discover the delights of Stewart Island."

  • "Born just after WW2, we were teenagers in the 60's when Elvis, The Beetles, The Beachboys etc were in - real music! I've still got a large shelf of original records (which cost weeks worth of pocket money) and they still work! Interesting that the current generation of teenagers love this music too. They can, however, get the entire collection of music from all these bands onto a device smaller than a pack of cards."

  • "Home - where the kids know they can come back to when everything around them falls apart - where they'll find their old teddy and their favourite books - where they are accepted and loved. Always room for them and their friends, always something to eat in the fridge and the cake tins. But still they are expected to clean the dunny, empty the dishwasher, feed the cat or bring in the washing without being asked."

  • "The force of love - way stronger than gravity, stronger than magnetism, stronger than superglue. It can make weak people strong and strong people weak - there's no other force that can turn itself inside out like that."

  • "I've grown accustomed to not winning prizes in competitions. Well I did last year, on this very website, and blow me down the show was cancelled. It's true, ask Gina. Not just accustomed - resigned to never winning. Oh well, maybe 2nd time lucky."

  • "Blue vein - it even looks a bit like my hands. It blends with other things to give them a lift - just like me. You can't disguse it - most things about me give me away too. Best of all, it ages well and so am I, as gracefully as possible."

  • "When I write an honest reply to a stupid or hurtful email - then delete rather than send - I'm being merciful. Years ago it used to be screwing up pages of hand-written replies. Live and let live - that's mercy."

  • "Friends live just a few km from major bush fires in Melbourne - too close for comfort from my perspective this far away - yet they think that living in Wellington with the ever-present threat of earthquakes is far worse. It all depends on your own perspective."
