"The Maldives baby. We may have delusions of geographical minimalism in New Zealand, but we haven't seen anything yet. A compilation of fragments broken off the Asian subcontinent powerhouses around it and a rare moment of breathtaking peace amidst the turmoil of the Indian Ocean. I suppose there's also the element of beholding something in a woefully precarious state - an Atlantis in the making. If sea levels continue to rise as they do, the Maldives could be one of the first places in the world to go and we would add it to the list of invisibilities that we tell our children about but they never really believe. To visit the nation created from this scattering of islets is a lifelong dream, to see the residue of all the glories of Dravidian culture focused into this tiny assorted collection of pure beauty. The tsunami of 2004 ravaged it once already and I am determined to see it before anyone lays a finger on it again. "
