The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo Returns to Wellington

The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo is returning to New Zealand next year for a performance at Westpac Stadium that will incorporate a replica of the Edinburgh Castle.

Each year 220,000 people watch the annual display of military bands and regalia live in Edinburgh, while a further 100 million people watch it on television.

1200 international performers are expected to participate in the Wellington event, including a New Zealand kapa haka group.

The Tattoo last came to New Zealand in 2000, in what was the first ever international performance after being established in 1950. Tickets sold out in two days, and organisers are expecting the same when tickets for the 2016 event go on sale at the end of this month.

The word "tattoo" derives from "tap toe", the call from 17th century Dutch innkeepers for last orders. It was soon adopted by the British army, who would march fifes and drums of the local regiment through the streets, their music signalling to soldiers it was time to return to barracks.

Tickets will be available to purchase on May 28th, with priority booking for those who sign up to the waitlist at the NZ Festival website.
