Jakob Awarded 2015 Taite Music Prize

Napier prog-rock band Jakob has won the 2015 Taite Music Prize for the album 'Sines'.

The recipient of the award, which aims to recognise creativity in New Zealand music, was chosen by members of Independent Music New Zealand and a select panel of judges.

Pennie Black, a member of the 2015 judging panel, commented: “Jakob produced a beautiful, thought provoking album. Listening to Sines, one is spirited away to a mystical place, from which you don’t want to return from. The album art was a complete stand out, and complimented the emotion and creative soundscape summoned by the band.”

Presented by last year's winner Lorde, the band take home a $10,000 cash prize, studio recording time at Red Bull Studios and a year's supply of Red Bull.

Beating out a strong list of contenders including albums Tiny Ruins, Grayson Gilmour and @Peace, 'Sines' is Jakob's fourth album, and their first in eight years.

Also presented at the ceremony was the Independent Music NZ Classic Record, which went to Herbs for their influential 1981 release ‘What’s Be Happen?’.
