The annual Winery Tour is kicking off in Tauranga tomorrow, with Dave Dobbyn, Don McGlashan, Supergroove and Anika Moa headlining. From there, the tour will stop off in eight other locations, performing at some of the most picturesque vineyards around the country. We caught up with Anika Moa, Queen of the Winery Tour (official title), for a quick chat about the shows, where she will be debuting songs her highly anticipated upcoming album, Queen at the Table.
What is it that you love about the Winery Tour that keeps you coming back?
I love the people that come to the shows. They are exciting and kind and lovely and endearing. I love that they bring the whole families and create a warm buzz. It's awesome.
What are some of your favourite memories from past Winery Tours?
There are so many but I guess it's touring with my amazing band in the past. It's just me and my guitarist this year so I'll be missing my band's amazingness. Also, Hollie and Boh and I and tequila. That is all I'm going to say.
Do you have a favourite location that you are looking forward to playing at again?
Neudorf and Blackbarn are my most exciting venues. They are beautiful and wonderous. Very captivating.
Do you have any survival tips or advice that you want to offer to Dave Dobbyn, Don McGlashan and Supergroove?
Well, sunblock and water helps. Oh, and don't forget your instruments. Also, going onstage after my set can be intimidating so sorry in advance. Lol
Will you be playing with a band? Who is in your band?
Jol Mullholland is my band. He is being paid for one job but I shall make him do many.
What can you tell us about your new album? Will you be playing many new songs on this tour?
My new album - Queen at the Table - is mellow but with some gorgeous moments. It shows Jol's producing skills and I do lots of harmonies and my writing has changed a tiny bit. I love it. Can't wait to play some songs off it.
As the Official Queen of the Winery Tour, what privileges do you plan on taking advantage of with your title?
I love my new title. It's like winning an award. Umm, I'll probably just boss all the boys around seeing that I'm the only woman on the tour... I think they took the other ladies off cos I'm a ladies man. Hehe.
