Timothy Hurd

Timothy Hurd (MusM QSM CLJ OMLJ) is National Carillonist of New Zealand.

Born in New York in 1952, Hurd studied composition with Krzysztof Penderecki & Jacob Druckman at Yale University, organ with Leonard Raver, harpsichord with Albert Fuller, with further post-graduate study in Holland and Belgium. He received the Artist’s Diploma in carillon performance with highest distinction from the Netherlands Carillon School in 1980, where he studied with Peter Bakker and Leen’t Hart. He pursued further graduate research in musicology at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven & studied Flemish carillon music with Jef Rottiers and with Piet van den Broek at the Royal Carillon School ‘Jef Denyn’ in Mechelen, Belgium. More recently, he has studied Renaissance woodwind instrument design with Eric Moulder in the UK.

In 1981, Hurd was awarded the ‘Prix d’Excellence’ in performance by the Netherlands Government. After two years as Carillon Scholar at the Historic Bok Tower in Florida, then teaching at the Scandinavian Carillon School in Denmark, he was named as National Carillonist of New Zealand in October 1984. The Queen’s Service Medal [QSM] for services to music was awarded in 1994.

Timothy Hurd is also active worldwide as carillon architect, consultant, composer and musicologist. He regularly sings with the Choir of Wellington Cathedral [bass] as well as with the internationally-acclaimed vocal ensemble The Tudor Consort.
