What Makes a Top Jazz Drummer?

This label is commonly applied to Mark Lockett, who heads the trio to play at our next gig, Sunday April 14 in the Plymouth Hotel. We put the question to him:

“It’s something talked about often and in my opinion it’s someone who is well studied in the jazz traditions and can convey the spirit of the music in any performance.

“There’s an old cliché that the drummer leads the band and it’s true that behind every good band there has to be a good drummer, regardless of who the official leader is.

“It’s not just about proficiency but the spirit of the music. Those are the memorable gigs for me.”
