Sole is a triple bill including the premiere of two exciting new dance works for this innovative contemporary dance company. Each work explores the experience of being in the world as an individual.

A work for three dancers by Kereana Mosen (Ngāti Hauā, Ngāpuhi) explores strength and uplift - how we carry and support each other.

A work by Phebe Mander for seven dancers looks at relationships and dynamics - the energy and rhythms we carry with us and how they interact and fold into each other.

The final work, Takiwātanga, is an autobiographical piece created with Jolt dancer Carl Huia. Carl’s view of the world is shaped by his Māori heritage, his personal history and individual spirit, and his lived experience of autism. The word takiwātanga (coined by Keri Opa) is used to describe autism and means 'his or her own time and space'.

"We are creating a dance based on my life and to tell a story about myself, my ancestors, and to tell people who I really am and to understand that I have autism and I'm happy for who I am and that I can do a lot of things just like everyone else in this world" - Carl

Company Biography
Jolt have been pioneers of innovative, inclusive dance practice since 2001, offering dance training and performance opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities. Their work challenges mainstream perspectives about dance and disability by exploring movements and connections that are artistically unique. The focus is always on the dancers: their own ways of moving, imagining and being in the world.
