This year is the 160th anniversary of the Battle of Pukehinahina-Gate Pa. This is an important event for our city, especially with some of the other things happening currently in Aotearoa. So, we are again offering free lectures to help our community understand our city's history and how it shapes our present.
The third lecture will be given by Graham Cameron (Ngāti Ranginui, Waitaha ā Hei, Ngāti Rangiwewehi, Ngāti Hinerangi) and is entitled Faith as resistance: Pai Mārire & Tauranga Moana.

Since the election last year we have seen a lot of debate around Te Tiriti o Waitangi, the use of te reo Māori, and the best way to address issues like the provision of health services for Māori. And over recent weeks we have seen some very significant hui being held in resistance to some of the policies that are being proposed. Graham will examine the role that faith has played in resistance in Tauranga Moana and the centrality of the Kīngitanga since 1858.

Graham brings a wealth of experience and formal qualification to this topic. Graham has a passion for integrating te Tiriti o Waitangi, kawa and tikanga into strategy and practice and supporting relationship building between the Crown and iwi and Māori communities. His study has included an examination of the historical theology of Pirirākau and, as a doctoral student in the Department of Theology and Religion at Otago University, a biblical analysis of the Te Ua Rongopai, the gospel of Te Ua Haumene, the founder of Pai Mārire.

St. George's Anglican Church, Gate Pā, sits on the site of the Battle of Pukehinahina - Gate Pā; one of the most significant events in the history of our city. We operate with the kaupapa of - let everyone who enters here be reconciled. There will be an opportunity for questions and discussion at the end of each lecture.

A koha – donations will be collected at the door to help cover the costs.
The lecture will be held at Te Whare Karakia o Hori Tapu - St. Georges Anglican Church, corner of Cameron Rd and Church St, Gate Pā, on the hill next to the Mega Mitre 10.
