Join jewellers Vaune Mason and Jennie Denston for this exciting course at our little Ōtaki Beach studio.
Sand casting is a hands-on low-tech casting method. Students will be shown how to mix their own non-toxic casting sand and create simple 2 part moulds for items such as simple pendants or chunky rings. You will be guided through the process of melting silver and pouring it into your sand-mould.
The idea with this type of casting is to work with the amazing natural texture that comes from the sand. You can use items such as pebbles, driftwood, twigs or even buttons and shells to make your mould. Existing rings can also be used - or wax models.
Water casting is even more low-tech and results in surprising and fun little forms that can be turned into earrings or pendants. Weather permitting we will be doing some of our melting and casting outside which would enable us to use copper or bronze. Windy or wet weather will keep us indoors and we will cast only in sterling silver or shibuichi (another copper & silver alloy).
Students will be guided to do around three or four casts, and should expect to have at least one successful item to clean up and finish for the end of the day. A basic amount of metal allowance is included in your course costs, and if your projects go over that amount you can pay for the metal you use on the day via internet banking or cash.
This course is open to complete beginners and advanced makers. Extra materials such as chains and findings are available to purchase. For health and safety reasons class participants must wear sturdy, closed toe shoes.
This is a full day course, tea and coffee provided but please bring your own lunch.
