Learn all about this ancient fruit at an evening hosted by Katherine Mansfield House & Garden. British orchardist Jane Steward will beam in from Norfolk, England, to unlock the mysteries of the medlar and discuss her '2023 book Medlar: Growing and Cooking', which has been shortlisted for the prestigious Fortnum & Mason Food and Drink Awards 2024. Those attending in-person will have the opportunity to enjoy Katherine Mansfield House & Garden’s own medlar jelly with cheese and crackers and sparkling cordial.
Jane Steward is the founder and owner of Eastgate Larder and a committed medlar enthusiast. She received her first medlar tree as a wedding present and is now dedicated to reviving this overlooked and forgotten fruit. An artisan producer of medlar jelly, chutney and gin, Jane looks after the 115 trees which she planted in rural Norfolk to create the Eastgate medlar orchard, now a Plant Heritage National Collection.
Jane’s talk will be delivered via Zoom, so can be attended by anyone around the world. We invite Wellingtonians to join us at Queen Margaret College to enjoy the talk on a big screen and taste medlar jelly for themselves with an opportunity to buy jars of the medlar jelly made from fruit from the medlar tree at Katherine Mansfield House & Garden.
Join us for the in-person event from 6pm, the talk will begin at 6.30pm NZ time. For those attending the online talk, please check the start time in your own time zone (this time zone converter may be helpful).
