Join us for a Young Members field trip to Corban Estate Arts Centre in the heart of West Auckland.
Meet us at the Coffee Studio for coffee or lunch (at own cost) from 12pm before the tour kicks off at 1pm.
After a walk across the Corbans grounds, our first stop is resident artist Brie Rate’s studio, where we will hear a kōrero between her and curator Melina Payne. We will then take a 15-minute stroll down to Kākano Gallery, where rangatahi (young people) will talk about the gallery’s projects and lead a fun and hands-on creative workshop for us. Refreshments by Almighty Drinks are included.
Brie Rate is a multi-media artist inspired by the natural world and green spaces in urban environments. With mental health, feelings of connectedness and concerns about ecological stability on her mind, she uses found and foraged materials to create gorgeous, tactile works of art – from collographs made with natural ink to woodcuts on handmade paper. Her collection for the 2022 Elam Graduate show was aptly called Secret garden made from muck.
Brie loves teaching art classes to children and young adults; she aims to make art accessible to all by sharing her printmaking, papermaking and upcycling skills.
Pimp My Spray Can workshop – Kākano Gallery
At Kākano Gallery, you’ll get to upcycle used spray cans into your own 3D artwork. Have a play with paint pens, acrylic, stencilling and spray paint to create your own, unique design. You might get a little messy, so don’t wear your best gear!
This workshop is taught by the rangatahi who run Kākano Gallery. Kākano means seed and the concept of He Kākano conveys growth, development, and expansion. By being part of the Kākano whānau, these young artists develop their art practice, confidence and skills in a safe and supported environment.

Corban Estate Arts Centre is an arts precinct in the heart of West Auckland, a Category 1 historic place based on the grounds of the former Corban Estate Winery. A thriving centre for arts and creativity, nurturing and supporting its local community.
Getting There: Corban Estate Arts Centre is on 2 Mt Lebanon Lane in Henderson, a 25-minute drive from the Auckland CBD, and within easy walking distance of Henderson train station. There is plenty of free parking available on-site. We will meet at the Centre’s café, Coffee Studio.
