THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED

Did you know that 2023 is the 200th anniversary of the year in which Mary Shelley, wife of the poet, Percy Bysshe Shelley, published her novel Frankenstein under her own name? She wrote this amazing work when she was only 18 years old. She first published it anonymously and, a few years later, re-published, using her own name as the author. Widowed at age 25, in 1822, she had born four children; three of them had already died in infancy. With a small son to support, she would have needed money from the sale of her book.
To honour Mary Shelley, and her amazing achievement, Polly Sussex (cello) and friends, Helen Acheson, (soprano) Carole Acheson (reader) and Sarah Kang (piano), have put together a programme of music and readings. The music is all by forgotten women composers of the nineteenth-century; the readings are from Frankenstein, the most outstanding novel of Gothic fiction. The composers are Emilie Mayer, Luise Adolpha le Beau and Josephine Lang and the music is all wonderful.
There is only one performance in Auckland, and one in Christchurch (Wednesday 9th August, All Souls Church, Merivale, 7.00pm).
Please come and help us to celebrate this wonderful woman’s first work.
