A choral concert by an enthusiastic Auckland diverse multinational choir.
Previously known as the Auckland Welsh Choir and recently renamed Vocālis.
The choir’s origins date back to 1988 originally the Auckland Welsh Club united in song to support the Welsh Rugby team playing the All Blacks. From this group, the Auckland Welsh Choir was established in 1999 and registered as a charitable organisation in 2006 and eventually began to incorporate other languages and styles of music into their repertoire.
The next big change came in 2020 with a transition in musical directorship, followed by Covid putting a stop to in-person rehearsals and concerts. During this time, rehearsals moved onto Zoom and began to include increased vocal tuition through exercises demonstrated by the musical directors and everyone singing their part with microphones on mute! When conditions allowed, the choir came together under the protection of the band rotunda at One Tree Hill Domain until indoor gatherings were permitted. We survived!
All members of the choir share a passion for singing with others and over 23 years have transformed into a diverse, multinational choir with a repertoire including a variety of musical genres and nearly 20 different languages!
Vocālis isn’t your standard community choir. Their two professional Musical Directors Steven Rapana and Diana Williams Rhodes, continually hone the choir's musicality and provide expert vocal tuition during their weekly rehearsals.
