The music of Shades of Shakti is a dynamic fusion of classical Indian music and jazz, combining intricate fast melodies on violin and guitar, virtuosic rhythms of the tabla and percussion, and the hypnotic tones of the sarangi, a highly resonant, ancient bowed instrument of India. Sarangi maestro Sangeet Mishra is an 8th generation musician visiting Aotearoa from Varanasi, India and is joined by Justin Firefly on guitar, Basant Madhur on tabla, Thomas Friggens on drumkit and Tristan Carter on violin.
Formulating a collaborative space between traditional Indian music and jazz idioms, Shades of Shakti have embarked on a national tour, braving the winter months on their way across the motu. Acclaimed by none other than Bret McKenzie — who gushed they are "one of those rare ensembles that transcend into the sonic stratosphere" — the energetic collective made their initial debut at the Wellington Jazz Festival in 2018 and played the New Zealand Festival in 2020. Attendees can look forward to original compositions and traditional India Ragas, including performances of works from Ravi Shankar's East Meets West and John McLaughlin's group Shakti. Don't miss Shades of Shakti in Tauranga with special guests at the Jam Factory this Friday.
