Response to Stella Brennan: Ancestor Technologies

Stella Brennan’s artistic practice often considers the way that artistic technologies and processes carry their own histories within them. Ancestor Technologies presents Brennan’s latest photographic installation Thread Between Darkness and Light, alongside a range of existing works. Utilising a broad variety of media, these works shift across differing modes of image making to consider key thematic concerns from a range of material perspectives.

Susan Ballard is an Associate Professor of art history at Te Herenga Waka Victoria University of Wellington, Aotearoa New Zealand where she teaches courses on art writing and the environment. Her book Art and Nature in the Anthropocene: Planetary Aesthetics was awarded the best book in the AAANZ Arts Writing and Publishing Awards 2022.

Caroline McQuarrie is an interdisciplinary artist whose primary interest is the concept of home, whether it is located in a domestic space, a community or the land we identify with. She works with photography, video and craft practices to explore meaning carried in photographic and craft-based objects and domestic, suburban or community sites. She is a Senior Lecturer in Photography at Whiti o Rehua School of Art, College of Creative Arts, Massey University, Wellington, New Zealand.

Lissa Mitchell is curator of historical photography at the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa and is the author of the recently published book, Through Shaded Glass – Women and Photography in Aotearoa New Zealand 1860 to 1960, published by Te Papa Press, 2023.
