Experience the magic of male voices and the joy of a mixed choir.

The New Zealand Male Choir is performing at Lake Wānaka Centre with Mount Aspiring College Choir on Thursday 14th September 2023 at 7.30pm.

The joy of singing in a choral setting is what brings the New Zealand Male Choir and the College Choir together for an evening of music. The choirs will perform separately and together so you get to hear the widest variety of sound. They will present music from modern shows to opera, from African-American spirituals to an old Irish air, from Billy Joel to Beethoven. This is a wonderful opportunity to hear mixed choral singing at its best.

The New Zealand Male Choir is an auditioned choir with over 40 members from Southland to North Auckland of which 34 will be on tour. Conducted by Hawkes Bay’s Joe Christensen, the Choir sing a range of music including classical, folk, waiata, gospel, operatic, popular, jazz, and contemporary.

The Choir has entertained audiences both nationally and internationally for the past 24 years including several tours throughout Europe, Australia, and Canada. The Choir practices with North Island and South Island groups meeting monthly, and collectively meet for rehearsals/concerts three or four times a year. This will be the second concert in an eighteen-day concert tour around the central and lower South Island.

Men interested in joining the choir can make contact via the website: www.nzmalechoir.co.nz or speak to any of its members at the concert.

Earlier this year the Mount Aspiring College (MAC) Choir competed in the annual Big Sing choral competition and returned home with several accomplishments under their belt. The group performed three pieces from the chosen genres in the competition (New Zealand/Pacifica, classical, and modern) at an exceptionally high standard, much to the delight of the school community. Nationally,
about 10,000 students from over 250 schools compete every year across New Zealand.

Choir Director Joanne Waide was thrilled with the result from the choir, and could not be prouder of what they achieved, “the students shone in this environment, and we look forward to refining our sound and repertoire for future competitions and events,” she said.

During the Dunedin regional finals, the MAC Choir received several accolades: the Young Ambassador’s Award for exemplifying the festival's spirit, the Isabel Chetwin Cup for displaying the most improvement among choirs, a Commended Award for their performance in the Director's Choice category with 'Don’t Stop Me Now,' and was presented the Conductor's Award.

The two choirs are looking forward to entertaining Wānaka and surrounding districts and give the promise of an enjoyable and memorable evening of music and song.
