Mokomoko
Written & Directed by Sherilee Kahui

How do you heal from intergenerational trauma as the result of a cultural genocide that people refuse to acknowledge? Asking for a friend…

#YesWeAreGoingThere

Moko is stuck between a rock and a hard place. She feels that a stronger grounding in her identity will help her heal from personal trauma, but the more she learns, the more she finds there’s so much work to do. Join Moko on her quest to discover the truth of her origin story, and help her to stay on the path to becoming the wahine toa she was born to be.

“I want wāhine Māori to come and feel seen, heard and empowered. This show is for us.” – Sherilee Kahui

Sherilee is a graduate of Victoria University of Wellington and Toi Whakaari: New Zealand Drama School. She has lived and made theatre in Japan, Australia and New Zealand. After becoming a mum to her first son, Darby, Sherilee toured her solo show, (A Smidge of) Pidge both around Aotearoa and to the 2017 Melbourne Fringe Festival. She has served as a trustee of Ngā Whakarākei o Whātaitai (Wellington Theatre Awards) and as a board member for BATS Theatre.

After her second year with Māori and Pasifika writers’ collective Maranga Mai (and while hapū with her second son, Jethro), Sherilee joined Breaking Ground where she developed her new work Mokomoko, which was performed in development at BATS Theatre in 2022.
