Ana, I te atapō tonu ka rewa ake a Matariki ka kitea mai, ā koirā te tohu o te tau hou.
Therefore, in the early morning when Matariki is seen rising, this is the sign of the new year.
Matariki hunga nui - Matariki of many people.
During Matariki the community of our wider West Coast gathers together to celebrate the passing of one year and the the hope of a new one. With the generous support of Auckland Council and participation from our west coasters, the West Coast Gallery will host several activities to heal and move on after the ravages and trauma of Cyclone Gabrielle earlier in the year.
From 22 July to 22 August the Lone Kauri School Exhibition features at the gallery, and there is a free three day Sherryn Eastman workshop from 21 to 23 July to create a collaborative ceramic totem to connect community and express healing and survival. Everyone is invited, hui hui mai, to create a commemorative artwork symbolising our resilience and positivity in the face of crisis and change.
Other workshops include 1000 origami cranes, small raft construction, face painting and star cookie decoration, and there will be a performance by the pupils from Lone Kauri School.
Kai includes a sausage sizzle.
