Conductor André de Ridder, with pianist Simon Tedeschi and the NZSO present three works celebrating the most American of musical styles - Jazz and Blues.
André de Ridder is that rare thing: a musician truly at home in whatever genre he finds himself in. Known for his outstanding interpretations of anything from Mozart opera to electronica, de Ridder leads the NZSO through an extraordinary night of American sound.
Opening with Mari by Bryce Dessner, pianist Simon Tedeschi then joins the Orchestra to perform Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue. From its iconic Clarinet opening until the exhilarating finale, Rhapsody in Blue encapsulates the jazz and blues of the 1920’s.
Wynton Marsalis is an innovator. Best known as a jazz trumpeter, he is also renowned worldwide for his classical performances and compositions. His Blues Symphony is rooted in the 12-bar blues and travels the spectrum of some of the great American music – Blues, Ragtime, Jazz, Country and more.
