The Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki Schools and Learning team are excited to host educators from the National Gallery of Australia for two days of teacher, kaiako professional learning and development.
Teachers will be taken through our latest exhibition Ever Present: First Peoples Art of Australia and introduced to a new learning programme, Art Ways. Teachers will learn the principles of the Art Ways of Learning, the National Gallery of Australia's values-based approach to best practice when engaging with its Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander arts programme and broader learning programmes. The five Art Ways of Learning principles include: Creating Memorable Experiences; Promoting Living Culture(s) of First Nations People; Centring First Nations Voices; Elevating First Nations Arts Diversity; and Encouraging Deep Listening and Thinking.
The day will also involve a drawing based hands-on workshop facilitated by artist Damien Shen.
Tea, coffee and lunch will be provided.
Book below for one of the two professional development days. Both days are open to Early Childhood, Primary, Intermediate, Secondary, and Tertiary teachers. This is a free event, but spaces are limited so booking is essential.

About the artist
Damien Shen is a South Australian man of Ngarrindjeri (Aboriginal) and Chinese descent. As an artist he draws on both of these powerful cultural influences to create works of intense personal meaning. In using his artistic talent to share his story he aims to open the eyes of viewers to new ways of seeing Australian identity and Aboriginal art. In February 2016, Damien Shen was the winner of the Blake Prize (emerging category), December 2015, the winner of the Prospect Portraiture prize, and a finalist in the prestigious Whyalla Art Prize and Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award along with being hand-picked for the Art Gallery of South Australia’s Tarnanthi Festival of Contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art.
His works are held in numerous public collections around Australia, including the National Gallery of Australia, Monash Gallery of Art, Art Gallery of Ballarat and internationally the Kluge-Ruhe Aboriginal Art Collection (Virginia, USA).
