It’s pretty hard to beat a performance by three professional musicians with the music they enjoy and want to share. Hammers & Horsehair are touring again and will perform for the Motueka Music Group at the Chanel Arts Centre on Tuesday 14 March with a salon concert of light classics that featured in programmes 100 years ago.

The name of the group refers to the hammers in the piano played by Jonathan Berkahn and the horsehair on the bow of Robert Ibell’s cello, and the trio is completed by soprano, Rowena Simpson.

The short pieces in their Homecoming concert were found in the programmes of Blenheim-born soprano Rosina Buckman, who toured the country during 1922-23 with cellist Adelina Leon and pianist Percy Kahn.

Hammers & Horsehair have re-imagined Rosina’s touring programme as chamber music, performing the songs and instrumental music from 1922-23 with just a pinch of opera. Period classics such as Alfred Hill’s “Waiata Poi”, the waltz “Il Bacio” by Luigi Arditi, Rimsky Korsakov’s mysterious “Song of India” and Dvorak's “Humoresque” feature in their concert, along with anecdotes about the original tour.

Tickets on sale in advance from Floral Affaire, High St, Motueka (cash only), or at the door on the night (EFTPOS available).

Hammers & Horsehair

Jonathan Berkahn (pianist) is an accompanist, soloist, chamber musician, choral conductor, composer and educator. He regularly accompanies Wellington’s Festival Singers and The Orpheus Choir, and is organist and choir master at St James’ Anglican Church in Lower Hutt. He has a degree in composition from Victoria University, an honours degree in keyboard performance, and a PhD in musicology.

Robert Ibell (cellist) was a member of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra from 1993 to 2019. He is now a cello and double bass teacher, chamber music coach, adjudicator and freelance performer. Robert is a member of the Aroha String Quartet, Hammers & Horsehair, the Papaioea Piano Trio and indie/folk/rock band Milkthistle.

Rowena Simpson (soprano) performs in chamber music and opera, and collaborates on new projects that connect classical music with the land and its performers. She studied and worked in The Netherlands from 1997-2006 and since her return has sung with many groups including NZ Opera, Pinchgut Opera, NZ Barok, The Queen’s Closet and Hammers & Horsehair.
