On November 11th 2023 we will be holding our annual Armistice Day service at the Clubrooms at 11 a.m.
The service will be presided over by our President John Bray AFM and our Padre Rev Hugh McCafferty.
Our guest speaker this year is Lt Cmdr Grant Finlayson of the Royal New Zealand Navy.
Our service will conclude with wreath laying outside at our memorial rock which locals will recognise being outside our clubrooms at 1 Waihi Terrace, Geraldine, beside the NPD.
Everyone is invited to join us in remembering this important day when the guns fell silent and the world celebrated the cessation of all military operations and hostilities in all theatres and fronts of WWI.
The armistice was signed between the allies of WWI and Germany in France at 5:45 a.m. on November 11 1918 however it came in to effect at 11 a.m. that morning. The phrase ‘the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month’ is often used to describe this moment.
Armistice Day is a day of remembrance and reflection, honouring the sacrifices made by those who fought and died in WW1 and subsequent conflicts. The day is always marked by two minutes of silence and in these moments we have an opportunity to reflect and remember those who have served, and those who continue to serve, our country in our armed forces.
