How did the largest women's protest march in Aotearoa New Zealand happen in 1983? It started with a phone call from a woman at Greenham Common peace camp in UK - wanting kiwi women to join an International Women's Day for Nuclear Disarmament.
Fast forward to a NZ Herald meeting advert, serendipity and good timing; diverse groups of women from a wide range of backgrounds, cultures and skills, making connections and organising at speed.
Kathleen Ryan and Karen Stacey were two of the women involved. They'll be interacting with those who attend and reflecting on their experiences. We can learn from past actions and this can help shape how we respond to the issues we face today.
Knowing our heritage - our herstory - can make us stronger.
About the speakers
Kathleen Ryan and Karen Stacey were involved in the International Day of Action for Women Acting for Nuclear Disarmament (WAND) that became the largest women’s protest march in Aotearoa New Zealand’s history. They had varying experiences at that time and afterwards.
