Life, love, death, earth’s beauty, nature’s cycles of renewal – Mahler based his song symphony “Das Lied von der Erde” (“Song of the Earth”) on these universal, timeless themes, having been inspired by 600-700 AD Chinese poems. Filled with sadness and longing, yet ultimately uplifting and achingly beautiful, it is arguably Mahler’s greatest piece.
Our concert starts with Mozart’s piano concerto No. 21 and its exquisitely lyricism has resulted in its being used in several films, including ‘Elvira Madigan’.
The concert features some of NZ’s finest artists. James Judd, NZSO Music Director Emeritus, conducts extensively in the USA, Europe and Asia. Simon O’Neill, one of the world’s finest tenors performs regularly with the world’s most prestigious opera companies and orchestras. Ex-Wellingtonian Mezzo-Soprano Wendy Dawn Thompson has also performed with many leading opera companies across Europe and locally. Pianist Benjamin Carter, a ‘rising star’, has already performed with the NZSO.
