Tonight we’ll be showcasing a series of documentary short films from deep within the archives of Aotearoa New Zealand’s modern history. First up, Auckland on Wheels: Historical Footage from the Auckland Transport Board Archive. This film is a fascinating insight into transport and industry in 1920s Auckland, before cars ruled our city’s roads.

Travelling on to 1946, Housing in New Zealand explores the housing crisis of the time and the development of housing throughout the century, up to the creation of the New Zealand State Housing project.

We return to Tāmaki Makaurau in Power to Piha, a 1965 film that follows a small team of men as they erect the power poles and cables through the vast bush of the Waitākere Ranges to bring the first mains electricity supply to Piha.

Finally, onto the West Coast of the South Island, for our feature film and new release, Jos.

The inventor of the selfie and a street photographer ahead of his time, Jos Divis pioneered techniques to capture images of ordinary people and their working lives in a way no one else could. Imprisoned for his beliefs, Divis lived his last years alone in the ghost town he helped bring to life, his family believing him dead. Jos follows an historian, a photographer and a museum curator on their journey of discovery, to give Jos Divis the recognition he deserves.
