Are you learning recorder?

Come and explore the wonderful world of recorder ensemble playing! You’ll get to play fun music with other budding recorder players from across auckland. Join us and discover more about this great instrument while being taught by professional recorder player Imogen Morris.

Suitable for children aged 7-13 years.

Two levels available:

Beginner (10:30am-12:30pm): participants can read basic music notation, and confidently play the notes B, A, and G on soprano recorder. Ideally, they will also have learnt low E and D, and/or upper C and D, and possibly some other notes besides these.

Advanced (1:30pm-3:30pm): this session is for more experienced players. They can play a wide range of notes and more complex rhythmic patterns. They can also play other sizes of recorder, such as the alto, tenor, and/or bass.

Registrations close 15 September 2023. The registration form can be found here: https://forms.gle/qGw8xeACD5txo6X59

With the support of the Auckland Council Creative Communities Scheme.

Essential Information:
As part of the registration process, you’ll be asked to identify what your child can confidently play. Please be as detailed as you can. This will help us to ensure that your child participates in the most appropriate workshop, so they can get the most out of the experience.

Basic note reading skills are expected of all participants.

After you submit your registration form, your form will be reviewed, and you will be contacted to confirm your child’s place in a workshop. You will also be sent an invoice that must be paid by 22 September in order for your child to participate.

Each workshop is limited to 20 participants. Registrations are on a first-come, first-served basis. If more than 20 children sign up to a workshop, a waitlist will be established.

Music will be sent out to participants in advance via email; participants will be expected to prepare their parts ahead of the day.

Each workshop runs for two hours; children must arrive on time and be picked up promptly at the end of their session.

About the Teacher:
Fascinated by early and contemporary music alike, recorder player Dr Imogen Morris is active as a soloist and in a variety of ensemble settings. She has performed concerts in Germany, Austria, and South Korea, as well as in New Zealand. Imogen is especially passionate about developing New Zealand’s unique voice in recorder playing and frequently performs and premieres works by New Zealand composers.

Imogen is the instrumental teacher for recorder at the University of Auckland, and also teaches recorder at a number of schools across the city. She believes in reflecting the professional player’s practice at all stages of learning. Her students learn sound technical skills to underpin expressive and innovative performances of a wide range of repertoire.

Imogen is a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Auckland, where she completed a PhD in 2022 investigating high-pitched Baroque alto recorders and their repertoire. She has presented research at a number of international conferences and been published by Academic Studies Press. Imogen’s research straddles the line between scholarship and practice, and she is interested in the ways each field can inform and provide inspiration for the other.

In 2017, Imogen completed a Master of Music in recorder at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg, studying with Prof. Peter Holtslag. Prior to this, she was taught by Jessica Shaw at the University of Auckland, where she received her Bachelor of Music with First Class Honours. Her education has been augmented by masterclasses with Han Tol, Myriam Eichberger, Peter van Heyghen, and Martin Ripper, among others.
