Join us as we celebrate Matariki with an exhibition of paintings, drawings, music, video, lights and more.
Evening celebration event: 6-8pm Friday 21st July.
This year we will draw inspiration from the nine whetu/stars of Matariki.
Matariki - the mother star, health and wellbeing
Pohutukawa -represents the spirits of the dead
Tupuanuku - associated with the food grown in the ground
Tupuarangi - food from the sky and is linked to birds
Waiti - connected to fresh water and living creatures in the rivers, streams and lakes.
Waita - associated with the ocean and represents food gathered from the sea
Waipuna-a-rangi - connected to the rain. The name itself means "water that pools in the sky"
Ururangi - connected to the wind. The name means "the wind of the sky"
Hiwa-i-te-rangi - the final star is hiwa-i-te-rangi which is connected to the prosperous season.
