What is a Fanworm?

The Mediterranean Fanworm is an underwater organism.

Why is it a pest?

The presence of Fanworm can affect the growth of mussels, oysters and scallops due to competition for food, thereby adversely impacting aquaculture ventures around the country. It attaches itself to the hull of vessels (large and small) or can be spread as larvae in ballast water. It was first detected in New Zealand waters in 2008. It is present in a number of harbours around New Zealand including the Waitematᾱ.

When: Thursday 31 August, 7-8pm
Free Admission – aimed at adults.
Bookings essential – info@navymuseum.co.nz or T: 09 446 1824.
